View from Ramallah reaction
SIR: I would ask you please to publish my response to Tom Kay's "View from Ramallah".
View from Tel Aviv
Your article "View from Ramallah", May 2002, by Tom Kay raises a number of questions.
1. Why did the editor, of what was considered to be a respectable architectural journal, choose to publish a one sided political "view" which has nothing at all to do with architecture?
2. Why did Tom Kay not mention the carnage in Natanya on Passover night that killed 30 people and which was the final event in a sequence of deliberate terror attacks targeted at Israeli civilians, that led to the reprisals into Ramallah and other terrorist hideouts?
3. Why does Tom Kay not direct his well intentioned efforts at persuading the Palestinian leadership to stop feeding their young people a diet of hate and sending them to "paradise" via suicide bombs?
4. Why does Tom Kay dare to defile the memory of the victims of the Nazi holocaust by even mentioning the abberrated images he describes in his naive diary? In Auschwitz the people who wore the spectacles he refers to were gassed and then cremated. Is this a part of the image he conjures up?
The answers to the above, I would suggest, lie in your blinkered view of the problem of Israel and the Palestinian Arabs. Copious documentation collected in Ramallah and elsewhere, link Arafat and the Palestinian Authority directly to the creation and nurturing of a terror infrastructure. Arafat himself expressed his desire to be one of the million suicide martyrs on the way to Jerusalem. If they choose to halt suicide bombers it's because they do not serve their purpose for the moment not because it's morally wrong.
Goebbels said, in the Second World War, that if you repeat a lie a thousand times it becomes the truth. You have fallen into the trap of Palestinian propaganda and show sympathy for these unfortunate people as we all do.They are however the victims of misguided Palestinian leadership and not of Israel's measures taken in legitimate self defence.Their leadership has kept them in their pathetic situation and continues to do so by rejecting Israel's offers of statehood and a chance to build a decent future.
By pubIishing the kind of article written by Tom Kay you passively condone the terror system and thereby become part of the problem.
Yours etc
