View from Ramallah reaction
Sir: I am outraged by the purely political article 'View From Ramallah', published in your May magazine. The article has nothing to do with architecture and despite your attempt to make it somewhat appropriate and newsworthy by affixing two half pages photos of the same shattered window building, the article has no place whatsoever in an architecture magazine.
Indeed, the writer is an architect. But does this fact make his experience or one sided and, in many instances, ignorant views worthy of being published in an architecture magazine of AR’s stature? While I can understand that the views and opinions expressed in the article are those of the writer rather than yours, one may wonder whether you would have published Mr. Kay’s whale-watching journey to Alaska (which, in my view, is as relevant to the AR magazine as Mr. Kay’s misfortunes in Ramallah (you could have probably obtained 2 half pages, dramatic, photos of Mr. Kay’s wind shattered tent or ship cabin for making the ‘whale-watching’ article more relevant!)).
The worst part of this article is the horrible comparison between the forty or so pairs of sunglasses on the Optometrist’s floor to those in Auschwitz (with all due respect, it does not invite comparison! (and, yes, I visited Auschwitz)).
Wars are horrible and we should condemn acts of violence of all kinds, but I think we have enough of it in other non-professional publications (no offense but Newsweek’s coverage of the Middle-East crises is better). Please continue to provide us with the kind of material for which we buy AR and if you end up deciding to go ‘political’ please choose your ‘analysts’ more carefully.
Yours etc
