KRATER LANDSCAPE SIR: It was with great pleasure that I saw one of the houses I have worked on as a designer published with a commendation in your December 2004 Emerging Architecture issue (p66). It was with dismay though that I saw that my name was omitted from the credits. As landscape architect to the project, my role was not only the planting design but also the design of external features such as the parking structures slipped into the hill on the south face of the house (photograph 1), the traditional ‘pezoules’ (stone retaining walls) descending like waves from the Krater to the ‘lava flow’ and the characteristic ‘lava flow’ itself (photograph 3) which connects the Krater to the guesthouse. You will note that in the architects’ plans this appears in its original design – a pathway leading from the house to the guesthouse – and not in my design of a V-shaped cut into the hill detailed with slanted stone walls and a slip of vestigial ‘natural’ landscape leading down from the ‘pezoules’ and out into the view.
