SET IN SAND UNREALISED DESIGNS BY ALVAR AALTO
12.6.2008 - 21.9.2008
Unrealised designs are an important part of an architect's work. The first fleeting sketches frequently illustrate more clearly than the actual realised building the genuine basic idea of a design and mirror the process of establishing shape and form. The hand drawings of Alvar Aaltos, one of the most significant architects of the twentieth century, are of the highest artistic quality. This ingenious draughtsman once said »God created paper in order to draw architectural plans«.
The exhibition 'Set in sand - Unrealised designs by Alvar Aalto' is showing 120 drawings and 18 models of those projects by the Finnish architect and designer that were never realised. The impressive works from the 1950's include international plans for projects such as the Piazza in Montreal, a Columbus Memorial in Santo Domingo and Museums of Art in Shiraz and Tallinn.
The exhibition was devised by the Alvar Aalto Museum in Helsinki.
SEP RUF (1908-1982)
31.7.08 - 5.10.08
To mark the centenary of the birth of Sep Ruf, the Architecture Museum of the Technical University Munich is holding an exhibition celebrating the life and works of one of the most important German architects of the 20th century. With buildings such as the New Maxburg in Munich (1953-1957, together with Theo Pabst), the German Pavilion at the World Expo in Brussels (1958, with Egon Eiermann) and the official Chancellor's bungalow for Ludwig Erhard in Bonn (1963|64), Sep Ruf received international acclaim and played a major role in shaping architecture in the post-war era.
MILESTONES AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN. EXAMPLE MERCEDES-BENZ
25.6.08 - 14.9.08
Striking in their radical posture - already from a distance they arouse our curiosity: Extremely rare examples of cars bearing the star symbol. Never before have they been seen in this particular composition, stringently focused on aerodynamics, speed and Gestaltung (form giving processes):
The Lightning Benz (Blitzen Benz) - capable of speeds of more than 200 km/h - almost a hundred years old! The Silver Arrow Grand Prix racing car »W 196 R« with its streamlined bodywork, 1954. The jet black painted sculpture of the Autobahn-Kurier of 1938 - unit numbers: 2. Equally rare the futuristic high-performance C111-3 of 1978 - a design study. The icon of style, the 300 SL Coupé - nicknamed the >Gullwing< because of its doors resembling wings, 1955. The Coupé CLS of 2004, untypically with four doors. The Bionic Car - a singular experimental car of 2005 whose shape was modelled on the streamlining characteristics of nature: To be exact - the aerodynamics of the cubicus boxfish (>ostracion cubicus<).
In conjunction with the cars, the exhibition also focuses on the design work. This is illustrated in the form of drafts, sketches, renderings, tapes and models. Die Neue Sammlung presents a walk-in installation in which the cars are featured as the outcome of design processes.
