WHAT STORE STREET IS
There were conversations on the BA flight to Los Angeles and more conversations
when we got there. Paul Hyett popped the question: what if you had a series of events
like those (in the deep past) at ‘Art Net’ and (in the recent past) of the Lowe Series at the Bartlett?
It would need to be different, I said : 'there are more "kiss and tell" lectures and meetings
to discuss architectural issues in London than any other city, but young architects are arriving
in their thousands – mostly from abroad – and still feel out of the conversation'.
Egged-on by Paul Finch and everybody at the Building Centre Trust, we are now ready to
complement New London Architecture with STORE STREET – a chirpy form of salon,
where all sorts of architects will come and talk to each other. The Architectural Review is the
media partner. There WILL be pictures – as background, as information, or even the odd
20 minutes of kiss-and-tell, but the key thing is the conversation between pairs or trios of
people – often from the same city but of different generations or different positions.
The bar at the back of the (new) hall will remain open throughout.
I will search out people from those other cities who have found their way to London. I will
introduce the fact that surprising combinations of people have been cronies/rivals/secret
supporters/avoiding each other for years.
