GKD – Xinghai

Since the completion of the National Grand Theatre, Beijing at the end of December, visitors have also had access to an exhibition on the worldwide history of opera houses. GKD also features in this exhibition. Along with numerous photos of opera houses and information on the history and development of opera, visitors will also find an exhibit of GKD wire mesh.

This 6 meter wide and 2.4 meter high panel of the "Xinghai" mesh used for the golden shimmering façade of the Peking Opera is an acknowledgement of the importance of GKD's role as a project partner in its construction. There is also a certificate confirming the significant contribution that GKD made to the overall look of the building with its cladding of the façade and the columns. The GKD mesh type Xinghai used for the façade is made of stainless steel warp wires and aluminium weft wires anodised in gold tones. GKD – Alu 202020

A golden skyline for the Plateau de Kirchberg in Luxembourg. The extension of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg has literally reached its climax with the new construction of two 100 meter high towers. In addition to the enlargement of the Palais de Justice itself, the twin towers provide a further 50,000 m2 of office space. The design for the extension came from Dominique Perrault and envisaged the complete cladding of the towers in a woven aluminum mesh especially developed for this particular application by GKD - Gebr. Kufferath AG.

Other special attributes:
The mesh was installed in the form of gold-colour anodized panels of varying sizes, on average measuring 3.70m x 0.75m. A special zigzag bending of the mesh gives the façade an extra sense of depth and lends the towers an extravagant character. In all, GKD supplied 7,724 panels with a total surface area of 20,190 m2.

Intended applications: Interior applications

- material: stainless steel

Alcove is more than just a piece of seating furniture. With its exceptionally soft cushions and high, flexible side and back panels, the Alcove Sofa offers shelter and security in a defined space. It creates a private, intimate setting in the midst of daily life. The Bouroullec brothers achieved this by using extremely thin elements for the load-bearing structure (especially in comparison to other sofas), thereby maximising the interior surface area.

Other special attributes:

GKD – Lamelle

In Vitacura-Santiago/Chile, the restaurant "Emilio" opened recently, offering not only tasty delicacies to tickle the palette but also an attractive interior design with wooden furniture and filigree details. For the suspended ceiling, architect David Rodriguez chose GKD stainless steel wire mesh of type Lamelle, which was installed as a single continuous panel. The mesh, with delightful accentuated lighting, continues down from the ceiling to become a transparent partition screen which creates an optical boundary to the bar area.

Other special attributes:
Attaching the huge, 83 sqm mesh panel presented a real challenge. Partly anchored to the metal structure of the building, it also required special attachment devices to anchor it in a wooden partition wall. These attachments were to remain visible as elements of the stylish interior design.

GKD – Futura 240

In February 2006, the Center for Sustainable Technologies and Processes was officially opened at the Adlershofer Technology Park in Berlin. It is an ensemble of four buildings with 27 laboratory modules, the four complexes being grouped around a central hall and communications hub, the Center of Gravity. The architects, Henn Architekten, intentionally used lots of steel and fair-faced concrete in their design. This included the transparent cladding of elevator shafts and staircases with 395 square meters of GKD stainless steel wire mesh of type Futura 240.

Other special attributes:
The two 15 meter high access towers with their elliptical cross-sections were to be given an airy yet impact-resistant and low-maintenance exterior cladding. GKD stainless steel wire mesh is the perfect choice for this purpose. A total of 32 mesh elements up to 17 metres long were installed by unwinding them horizontally and then fastening them under tension. Now, when using the stairs, the staff enjoy an unhindered view over the whole building complex.

They are made of solid beech (M1 varnish) and allow technical advances to be integrated. At the back of the auditorium, the acoustic grid wall panels ("Jaganda" model) give complete control over reverberation.

Intended applications: Ceilings
