GKD – Gebr. Kufferath AG: ILLUMESH®
Illumesh® wins the SEGD Merit Award 2008 from the Society of Environmental Graphic Designers (SEGD) Washington, DC, USA. Each year, in the framework of this design award program, a jury of renowned designers honours outstanding projects in the field of environmental graphic design. Illumesh® – a woven metal mesh with LED profiles mounted forward of the woven fabric project light onto the reflective stainless steel, indirectly illuminating the façade – was developed in collaboration between GKD – Gebr. Kufferath AG and ag4 media facade GmbH.
Other special attributes:
The jury chose Illumesh® for its interplay of light, art, and architecture. The worldwide debut for Illumesh® was its installation on the façade of a well-known cheese company in Brittany, France. At night, two large mesh screens – one measuring 67 square meters, the other 100 square meters – illuminate the façade with fascinating displays of colour that are visible from miles away. During the day, the façade takes on a shimmering metallic look while the view looking outward from inside the building remains unobstructed.

GKD – Gebr. Kufferath AG: Omega
Sport is spectacle: All over the world, sports stadiums reflect this media dimension of the phenomenon. The Stade de Suisse Wankdorf in Bern, Switzerland, is an imposing structure built to the plans of architects Luscher, Schaar and Rebmann and provides seats for 32,000 spectators. For the façade, the architects chose various types of Omega stainless steel mesh made by GKD – Gebr. Kufferath AG.
Other special attributes:
The façade was clad with 6,500 square meters of the GKD wire mesh type 1510 or the blended mesh type Omega 1510-1520. The choice was made not only for aesthetic reasons but also because of the functional properties of the Omega mesh. It is suitable for use as a projection surface and, thanks to its close weave, ensures good ventilation of the turf while preventing draughts in the stadium.

GKD – Gebr. Kufferath AG: Escale
Match Point for GKD – Gebr. Kufferath AG. The new Olympic Tennis Centre in Madrid, a sports venue of superlatives, is clad in glittering façades made of GKD stainless steel wire mesh. 25,000 square meters of the shimmering woven metallic fabric were installed in panels of different sizes. The largest panel measures 23 x 7 meters.
Other special attributes:
The mesh type Escale 5x1 is used in the skirts under the stands, while the façades of the Tennis Centre are clad with Escale 7x1. The façade of the "Caja Magica", the centre court or "Magic Box" is an exception. Here, a special type of Escale mesh produced specifically for this project is used: Escale 10.5x1.2.
The project is expected to reach completion in autumn 2008.

GKD – Alu 202020
A golden skyline for the Plateau de Kirchberg in Luxembourg. The extension of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg has literally reached its climax with the new construction of two 100 meter high towers. In addition to the enlargement of the Palais de Justice itself, the twin towers provide a further 50,000 m2 of office space. The design for the extension came from Dominique Perrault and envisaged the complete cladding of the towers in a woven aluminum mesh especially developed for this particular application by GKD - Gebr. Kufferath AG.
Other special attributes:
The mesh was installed in the form of gold-colour anodized panels of varying sizes, on average measuring 3.70m x 0.75m. A special zigzag bending of the mesh gives the façade an extra sense of depth and lends the towers an extravagant character. In all, GKD supplied 7,724 panels with a total surface area of 20,190 m2.

Balcony has the sophisticated solutions for clear glass balconies, combining clean aesthetics with safety. The self-supporting balustrade system uses extruded aluminium handrailing to create curved or straight glass balconies of up to 3.8 metres without vertical or corner posts. In a choice of bronze, natural satin or RAL colour finishes, the system can also be used for stair and gallery balustrades.

GKD – Crystal PC Sambesi
A flashy entry of the special kind refurbishes the ’Schadow Arkaden’, a shopping arcade in Duesseldorf, Germany. An elaborate canopy was constructed with the innovative wire mesh of the type Crystal PC Sambesi by GKD. The wire mesh with its build-in Swarovski crystals creates integrated, high quality light effects in the entrance area.
Other Special Attributes:
A total of 80 square meters was processed into three 4 x 4 rectangular blocks. They are selectively fastened to the building and appear to float above the entrance area. The canopy serves as a distinctive point of orientation for passers-by by day, at night it is transformed into a dazzling alternative competing with the Duesseldorf sky full of stars.

GKD – Escale 7 x 1
A shapely balcony of a special kind decorates the traditional Metro Hotel at the heart of Seoul. Right above the entrance an elaborately curved corner balcony made of the GKD stainless steel wire mesh Escale 7 x 1 was installed. In addition to the balustrade, the ceiling of the balcony is also made of the shimmering material.
Other Special Attributes:
20 panels of the spiral mesh in total were manufactured in rectangular form, then locally and individually adjusted to the building in order to create an elegant round construction. The balcony not only invites to stay, but also serves as an optical highlight of the façade at the same time.
