UN Studio’s Ben van Berkel poses with the New Amsterdam Pavilion which opened in Battery Park, New York on September 9 and is expected to attract over six million visitors annually.
The Pavilion and Plein (public square) have been presented as a gift from the Netherlands to New York to commemorate their 400-year relationship.
The structure consists of four wings and houses digital information points for visitors to the area and New York City. In addition, the Plein will offer outdoor seating.
The pavilion’s smooth, white roof runs continuously round and down to form the structure’s sidewalls and large glass windows provide light and views of Battery Park. At night the pavilion is illuminated by an electronic LED facade system.
