This square in Greece was designed by three freelance architects, Dimitris Kontaxakis; Maria-Eleni Kosmidou and Spiros I. Papadimitriou.

The primary programmatic objective was to redefine the border of the existing square.

Its dynamic form is a result of digital animation techniques, to be presented at this year’s eCAADe conference, Istanbul.

Two networks - the ‘pedestrian circulation’ and ‘program’ - interact dymnamically to generate the informal public space, designed to promote new behaviours and unexpected uses.

The square is reimagined as a 3D surface instead of a 2D surface; it is articulated by six freeform stripes of varying height, size and material.

The informal, oblique architecture, along with the generated sense of imbalance invites users to interact with the folded new terrain surface.

This is talent. Collectively, they’ve created a space people are drawn too, but I can’t speak to everyone else… just me. I’d find my roost and people watch from this square.

Congratulations! It was time to design something new in the city of Thessaloniki, a square that becomes shelter for all ages, where everyone can find his personal favorite spot. Walking the square, interacting with its surfaces or just watching people occupying it is a great experience.
