Sustainability Winner Town Town - Erdberg Office Tower, Vienna, Austria
COOP HIMMELB(L)AU Wolf D. Prix / W. Dreibholz & Partner
‘This well illustrated presentation posits the powering of buildings by the whole-facade PV treatment with additional gen eration elements which produce enough power to power the entire building. The architecture holds out the posibility that energy design can stimulate creative forms in the city.’
Wind flow lines and and sun trajectory were used to generate the form of the building. Wind absorbtion is made possible through specialised cladding. Sun and glare treated, the vertically tilted glass panels provide natural lighting and views.
The photovoltaic lamination, using thin-film-technology, on the perforated sheet metal panels create an energy-active skin. Of 1100 kWh/m²a total solar input 165-220 kWh/m²a can efficiently be used.

At the top of the building a wind turbine works in conjunction with the facade’s photovoltaic thin-film-system. Together the wind turbine and facade are estimated to provide more than the needed electrical energy of the building. Surplus energy is sold back to the utility company.
