Garden Tower, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for the Al-Birr Foundation al_birr_interior_ghost_final-resize

Winner Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

This was an unexpected and welcome example of high rise building which had a dynamic relationship between plan and section. The controlled external form is environmentally responsive projecting internal voids which dramatically expand the experience of the building.

This 30-storey tower – headquarters of the Al-Birr Foundation – has 1,000 and 1,200m2 floorplates and features a continuous ground level to roof hanging garden.

The external enclosure is
made from lightweight glass-impregnated photocatalytic precast concrete supplemented with fly ash. This is not only designed as a structural support but, with a largely transparent north elevation and an almost opaque south elevation, it serves to control solar and
heat gain.
