Wieden + Kennedy Office, London by Featherstone Young Architects

Interior showing garage doors

This is the new office of advertising agency Wieden + Kennedy, located in The Old Truman Brewery in London’s Brick Lane area

Interlocking rooms

The refurbishment and internal fit out of the brewery - now known as ‘The Cole’ - was the winning entry to an invited competition in 2008.

Circulation

The intervention creates both a lively workspace and an events venue, as well as providing facilities for a new craft and product development area within the agency.

Custom furniture

Vintage WC fit out

Featherstone Young, formerly Featherstone Associates, have also included a kitchen and dining area for staff, which features second-hand cabinet handles, a nod to the nearby Petticoat Lane and Spitalfields flea markets.

The red corridor

The workspaces feature ‘crows’ nests’ floating libraries which use the double height spaces in the brewery’s shell. They create smaller, more intimate spaces beneath them and serve to nearly double the floor area.

The garage doors

Just off the main space, a series of ‘garage lock-ups’ have been customised with up-and-over doors, creating hideaway spaces which can also be extensions to the main space.

The rainbow staircase

The red corridor

The ’stairway to nowhere’ and ‘red-tunneled corridor’ are intended to be ‘fun’ spaces which use everyday materials and bright colours to contrast with and complement the industrial surroundings.

I quite like this space! It is modern, fun and accommodating to agency work and lifestyle. The garage lock-ups and ‘crows’ nests’ floating libraries were what really sold me, though. Love it.
